Q:What types of trips does GIVE WEST go on?

A:

GIVE WEST’s touring takes you on a road trip from Arizona all the way up to Washington! On the way we hit hot spots like Phoenix, San Diego, Los Angeles, Fresno, Sacramento, Ashland, Portland and Seattle. At each location GIVE WEST participants enjoy fun activities like banana boating, hiking, rafting, zip-lining, rappelling and more!

Q:What are the travel arrangements on GIVE WEST?

A:

NCSY GIVE WEST starts in Phoenix, AZ and ends in Portland, OR. Each participant is responsible for their transportation to Phoenix and returning home from Portland. NCSY Summer does offer an optional group flight from JFK to Phoenix and from Portland to JFK for a fee.

Q:What type of chesed is done on GIVE WEST?

A:

On GIVE WEST, you do all sorts of community service – from working in soup kitchens and food pantries, to medical clowning in hospitals and packaging food for the needy. Work with disabled individuals and help rebuild schools in underprivileged and underserved communities.

Q:Where do we stay on GIVE WEST?

A:

GIVE WEST is a traveling program. We stay in hotels in all of the cities, and in homes in the Jewish communities for each Shabbat.

Q:Is it a problem if I don’t know anyone else going on GIVE WEST?

A:

No way! Before the summer starts, NCSY GIVE WEST launches a Facebook group to help you get acquainted with your fellow GIVErs. Your advisors will also call to introduce themselves. Many girls go on GIVE WEST without knowing anyone, but everyone leaves the program feeling like a part of the GIVE WEST family.

Q:How many girls go on GIVE WEST?

A:

GIVE WEST is a one-bus program. In order to maintain a sense of camaraderie, we only accept 40 teens and five advisors. It’s sure to be one crazy road trip!

Q:If I go to public school, will I feel comfortable on GIVE WEST?

A:

Of course, you will! The girls on GIVE WEST are incredibly warm and friendly. They come from all different backgrounds and create an atmosphere that is extremely open and accepting. There is no minimum requirement of Judaic knowledge, just an open mind and readiness to learn and grow.

Q:Is there a learning component to GIVE WEST?

A:

GIVErs are divided into small chaburahs (learning groups) led by their advisors in a fun and interactive way. These daily learning sessions allow you to explore those topics that interest you. Every Shabbos we have meaningful sessions and Beit Midrash time where you can learn — either alone, with a friend or with your advisor.

Q:Will I be able to grow as an individual on GIVE WEST?

A:

Yes! One of the unique things about chesed is that by giving back to others, you learn about yourself. On GIVE WEST, you quickly realize that by using all of your talents and gifts, you have the power to make a difference in the lives of others. What better way to connect to your Judaism than by learning how valuable you are as a member of the Jewish people!

Q:What is the staff like on GIVE WEST?

A:

Each advisor on GIVE WEST has a unique combination of outstanding characteristics. They are incredible, cool, fun and down-to-earth girls who will always be there for you and are happy to help you with anything that you need.
